Abs
Whether you’re in your twenties or your fifties at one time or another you’ve thought about your abs. From couch potatoes to athletes at one time or another we’ve had our attention drawn to our abs whether it’s from the barrage of television advertising warning you about the dangers of belly fat or from the countless emails you get telling you all the quick fixed for your abs.
Our abs are the muscles that determine the shape of our waist and hips, they are the muscles that help us prevent backaches and they’re probably the most underused and abused muscles in our bodies.
When it’s time to consider losing a few quick inches the easiest area of our bodies to focus on (and the most difficult to shed inches from) are the abs. Countless stomach crunches, sit ups and other equally torturous methods of exercise can help firm and sculpt our abs.
If summer is coming the first thing we think about is what our abs are going to look like in our swim suits – and for many of us that means that we’re convinced that the only suitable bathing suit is the one that will cover our abs.
Dreaming of flat abs?
If you’re one of the many people who are searching for flat abs you might think that the only way to get them is to work your abdominal muscles to death – but chances are for most of us, hours of abs crunches, may not help you get there!
Flat abs are not only difficult to achieve (even with hours and hours a month of exercise) they may not be in your genetic makeup! Stop and consider that your genes may be preventing you from having the flat abs you’ve been dreaming about.
In addition to regular exercise, there are other components (besides cooperative genes) that go into those flat abs you’re dreaming about including a strict diet and regular exercise plan. There are many theories about getting and keeping those flat abs and most of them are just that – they’re theories that in practice don’t always work!
What can you do?
If you’re looking for great abs the first thing you need to do is reduce your overall body fat – understanding of course that your genetic makeup might determine for you where that weight comes off. Exercise that is appropriate for your whole body (i.e. such as cardio) is the best exercise for all of us, and doesn’t focus just on your abs.
Walking is great exercise, and if you can walk two or three days a week for fitness you’ll soon find yourself with a better shape and more stamina. In addition, strength training is a great option for not only healthy exercise but to improve your overall health.
Summary
Don’t undertake any type of strenuous exercise program without first consulting with your doctor and don’t under any circumstances focus your exercise on just your abs. Combining a healthy diet and regular exercise is a great idea for all of us and your abs will be firm and tone like the rest of your body!
