What is a Tummy Tuck

What Is a Tummy Tuck and what are the Benefits?

Tummy tuck, clinically known as abdominoplasty is a procedure where excess skin is removed to create a flat abdomen. Most of the time, it is a procedure done after a liposuction to remove sagging skin. But can a tummy tuck replace liposuction altogether?

The skin when stretched can still return to normal. So what is a tummy tuck and its benefits? While some people would consider a tummy tuck for cosmetic reasons, people experiencing skin sagging would opt for this type of procedure.

Those who just came from pregnancy and have experienced rapid weight loss are leading candidates for tummy tucks. There are those who want their tummy trimmed for therapeutic reasons. If this is your reason, then your medical insurance might consider paying for the cost of the procedure.

There are two types of abdominoplasty, traditional or complete abdominoplasty and partial lower abdominoplasty. The latter is referred to as the scar-less tummy tuck procedure. Either of them would be a good alternative compared to other types of toning surgeries such as liposuction.

Standalone liposuction is only done if you have firm and elastic skin. However, if you have a large amount of sagging abdominal skin then a tummy tuck is recommended. Bruises and swelling disappear after a few weeks. Just like any other invasive procedure, there are risks involved and one must know what these are.

•    Reaction to anesthesia.
•    Hematoma or a collection of blood under the skin.
•    Scarring and poor healing process.
•    Numbness.
•    Bleeding.
•    Infection.
•    Blood clots most especially those who are taking birth control pills.
•    Skin tissue death due to smoking and diabetes.

While a tummy tuck is considered a better option, treatment depends on the needs of the patient.  However, tummy tuck is not the only solution for a firm and flat abdomen. Since this is a cosmetic procedure, your insurance will not be responsible for any costs.  If you ever decide to go for a tummy tuck, make sure that you really need it.
